95 Points Luca Maroni
Tasting Notes: Spice, wood and dark chocolate followed by dried fig and blackberry
The sweet notes of the Appassimento combine pair perfectly with game, dark chocolate, and aged cheeses.
Faliero is the label under which winemaker Dezzani markets his wines on the foreign market. Since 1934, the Dezzani family has been making wine in Monferrato, Piedmont. Since the 1970s and 1980s, their wines have enjoyed enormous fame in Italy, because they know how to capture the typical character of Piedmont in their wine very well. Luigi (Jr.) Dezzani, the third generation, is now at the helm of the winery. This trend has been continued under his leadership, with more different vineyards and wines, and more attention to collaboration and the foreign market.
The fact that their wines are of high quality and so well capture the typical character of Piedmont is partly due to the vineyards: the Dezzani family has the best vineyards in Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato. In addition, winemaking was of course something Luigi learned from an early age. With a lot of passion and knowledge, they try to bring out the best qualities from the grapes every year.
Of course they boast powerful red wines from the well-known appellations Barolo, Barbaresco, and Asti. They also have lesser-known, but equally special, wines in their repertoire. For example, the Appassimento, made from grapes that have been left to dry on the vine, or the Roero Arneis, a white wine made from the Arneis grape, a variety that you actually only find in Piedmont.
